Hanstholm weekend...

What a weekend!
I had the best conditions and the best session of my season 2009. Hanstholm was just going off. Pretty much like South Africa, super nice down the line conditions with really nice waves and 4.2 sail.
It was quite a challenge because I haven´t been sailing so much in sideshore conditions this year, so I really had to push my bottom turning and keeping speed on the wave. In the end it felt quite comfortable and it would be so nice to have more days like that before the PWA Worldcup in Sylt will happen.. but now I´m back to work, quite exhausted from the weekend and dreaming of the nice waves......

Herrlich!!!

So könnte es von mir aus weitergehen......

Schöne Grüsse von der Küste!

Now it is really Blowing!!

Kevin: Well today was super windy.. Went out for a wave sail and got blown off the water on a 4.7 Manic but the waves were pretty fun and good to get out into the wave action again. Then went down for a slalom session and felt pretty good until I got lifted up and spit out by a gust and slammed my neck into the sail... so now I got a wrenched neck and hoping to get it all back to normal soon. The new Vapors feel really nice . If you want to get your order in for some, you better it in quick. They are moving pretty fast these days.

Manic 4.7 (Test Boardseeker)

The light and manoeuvrable feel of the Manic really inspires you to throw the sail around. This is particularly noticeable in powered up conditions, where the Manic remains comfortable through manoeuvres, whilst other sails become a handful. The Manic has reasonable bottom end, but leans towards sailors who are willing to sacrifice a bit of power in return for light handling and top end control. More...

*Update* Gaastra Broschüre 2009

Its not official, but....

Its not official, but if there was a constructor ranking for the sails, Gaastra would probably be at the top after an impressive display by their riders in Cape Verde.

Leading the way was Kevin Pritchard who ripped his way to 3rd position with a solid performance like always.

Next up was Ross Williams. Even more impressive is that he fought his way through the whole double elimination taking out legendary wave riders, levi Siver and Jason Polakow on the way. He eventually finished 6th.

Thomas Traversa was right behind in 7th place, putting on possibly the most stylish performance of everyone. Huge rail grab airs off some of the largest waves. if it wasn't for Ross stopping him, he could have gone even further.

So a great start for Gaastra. It will be interesting to see how the constructor ranking goes this year.

Interview Kevin Pritchard (Kapverden)

Kevin Pritchard: “I’d like to think so, but the waves here are just so critical. You have to get the right waves to win the heat. It’s definitely a huge advantage to have the wave knowledge that Josh has, and to some extent Kauli, as he was down here real early to train for the event. But this wave kinda suits my style, it’s the same direction as Hookipa, and it’s a big powerful wave, so I’d like to think that one day I could win here.”

Kevin: “I think he got slightly better waves, and just rode them a little bit better. He was more in the critical section; he’s got a lot of confidence, he knows exactly when and how that wave’s going to break. He’s ridden so many waves at Ponta Preta he knows it so much better any anyone else, and that really helps out.”

Kevin: “I was just trying to get the best wave out there, and really focus on my wave selection. We were both getting a bunch of good waves so it was really a case of giving it all I had on everything I got.”

Kevin: “I think when you’re sailing out there you’ve got to have that big air off the main peak to really come out looking good. I was definitely looking for that, and Josh goes for exactly the same kinda thing. But, couldn’t say if Josh’s style was influencing my game, maybe it was, but I was just trying to give it my all.”

Kevin: “It’s definitely hard, like one wave, he got a real nice one in front of me. I was just getting ready to bottom turn and suddenly I hear the whole crowd erupt. It’s really hard to stay focused when it’s like that. It doesn’t make me nervous, but you feel this whole vibe that everyone wants Josh to win. I dunno, maybe it even influences the judging a bit, like when the crowd goes wild for one of his waves, it’s going to be hard not to think it’s better than my wave, which has no cheers or anything.”

Kevin: “He’s a fierce competitor and he uses all his tactics to his advantage, for sure. In this heat he didn’t really do that to me, but in years past we’ve had our scuffles y’know.”

Würdest Du ähnliche Taktiken anwenden?

Kevin: “ Sure. If that’s what it takes to win. It’s all part of reading the conditions. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just competition.”

Wenn Du Dich jetzt entscheiden müsstest: Wäre Dir der PWA Wave oder der Slalom Titel wichtiger?

Kevin: “Probably the wave champion. I think that amongst professional windsurfers, the wave title is slightly more sought after than the slalom. But for me this year I’m focused on both, and just trying to give my best in competition.”
